This may come as a shock, but dozens of people die and thousands of pedestrians are injured in New York City each year as a result of being hit by cars, including being hit by taxis.

Depending on which statistics you follow, “car hits pedestrian” deaths were reported at 150 in 2012, 183 in 2013, and 139 in 2014. According to the New York Times, there were 133 deaths in 2015. In fact, in just the first two months of 2016, 26 pedestrians were killed and 2,277 injured.

Mayor DeBlasio has adopted a plan called “Vision Zero” based on the Swedish concept that every traffic fatality is preventable. His plan includes lowering speed limits to 20 mph in “slow zones,” redesigning dangerous intersections, and more heavily enforcing speeding and traffic violations, among other law enforcement activity.

Still, the city continues to see “car hits pedestrian” accidents every single day, including the death of a 9 year-old boy in the Bronx in 2014. According to the Visions Zero Traffic Crash Map, as of today, 2016 has seen 193 fatalities and 49,153 injuries.

Accidents between cars or taxis and pedestrians rarely ends well for the pedestrian. If you’ve been involved in an accident with a vehicle, it’s in your best interest to contact your attorney immediately.
